Question:How does the speed of a comet change as it travels along its orbit?

As the comet travels along its elliptical path its speed changes.

As the comet approaches the Sun, it accelerates due the Sun's gravitational attraction.

As the comet passes and begins to head away from the Sun again, it decelerates because it is now travelling in the opposite direction to the force due to the Sun's gravitational attraction.
