Question:Why is darker skin better protected against Ultraviolet radiation?
When we get a suntan, our skins are darker because it has produced more of a natural pigment (colour particle) called melanin.
People with permanently dark skin have naturally higher levels of melanin all the time, which is the only reason their skin is darker.
Melanin absorbs the UV radiation in a harmless way just like a sunscreen does.
The more melanin you have the longer it takes UV radiation to cause a skin burn and the lower the chance of it causing skin cancer etc.
